The Silent Problem of Menstrual Waste Disposal

Sanitary waste disposal is a critical problem that needs to be tackled as a matter of urgency. Strange as it may seem, a single woman can generate up to 125 kg of non-biodegradable waste through her menstruating years alone, which ends up staying in landfills for up to 800 years, leading to health and environmental hazards. The perilous effects of ever-growing mounds of menstrual waste plague all of the world, contributing to devastating epidemics. The one way to take care of this burning issue is by using biodegradable sanitary pads that are available online

The silence shrouding the issue of menstrual waste disposal solidifies the crisis, predicted to grow exponentially unless managed for the better. Due to the lack of awareness and the many legal gray areas in the blood-smeared territory, most women dispose of used sanitary pads, wrapped in secrecy, along with the rest of the domestic waste. This exposes the waste pickers to pathogens, like E. coli, salmonella, staphylococcus, responsible for life-threatening diseases. The Menstrual Hygiene Alliance of India (MHAI) has approximated that 36 percent of 336 million menstruating women in India, amounting to nearly 121 million women, use disposable sanitary napkins, the majority of which are not biodegradable! The numbers add up to about 11.6 billion sanitary napkins a year, reckoned from a conservative eight per menstrual cycle. The bulk of conventional disposable sanitary napkins are made of 90% plastic; each pad is equivalent to around 4 plastic bags

But all is not lost, the Red Dot program, kicked off by Pune’s SWaCH waste pickers’ cooperative and PMC, is aimed at improving the way we dispose of sanitary waste. It is to sensitize people to the problems faced by sanitary workers and waste pickers who, perforce, need to handle this waste. Hi Life is making sincere efforts to further the Red Dot initiative. Each of the organic cotton sanitary pads by Hi Life comes in a biodegradable disposal bag marked with a Red Dot for easy and safe disposal. These pads are the best sanitary pads for heavy flow because these pads are for sensitive skin in India. Our organic pads are long pads with wings and serve the dual purpose of keeping us and the waste pickers safe.
